Lakisha
Let’s Dance the Last Dance - Donna Summers

Gwen was really happy with Lakisha, and thought she was amazing. Tonight, she sang an incredibly popular song, and one that is a bit more upbeat. Sometimes I found that the register was a bit too low. She could still hit the low notes, but they weren’t my favorite to listen to. Overall I wasn’t completely blown away by her, but she is still very good, and all of the judges seemed to like it.

Chris Sligh
Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic

One thing that the judges always comment on with Chris is that he is off tempo, and even Gwen commented on it. I did find that he was a little bit fast in the beginning, and also during the chorus too. This concerns me, because he doesn’t really seem to be able to fix the problem. All of the judges really cut him down.

Gina Glocksen
I’ll Stand By You

Gina Glocksen from pretender to contender
I was so impressed with Gina tonight. She started out really amazingly, and I thought it was the best that she’s ever done. I think she really stepped it up this week, and she chose the perfect song, so I was really happy with her. Simon complimented her more than he did Lakisha and said it was by far her best performance of the entire season.

Sinjaya Malakar
Bath Water – No Doubt

Sanjaya Malakar - Mohawk Hair style
I can’t even begin to understand why he chose the hairstyle that he did tonight. I was actually pretty embarrassed for him. He had a huge Mohawk… but I have to give it to him for really going for it. I actually thought he did a decent job. It’s a really cool song, and I know it was difficult for him, but I think it suited his voice. He forgot the words at one part, but I actually thought it was one of his best performances. This was the first night where I actually could see that he has a decent voice.

Haley Scarnato
True Colours – Phil Collins

Haley looked really pretty tonight in a sleek and short black dress. I thought the performance was okay. I think she could have done a lot more with the song, and I expected more out of her. It was a bit boring, and it wasn’t amazing vocally either. Paula said that she should aim to be more contemporary, which I thought was a good suggestion.

Phil Stacy
Every Breath You Take – The Police

Gwen said she was really presently surprised with Phil, and didn’t expect him to be that good. This is personally one of my favorite songs, and I knew that it would really suit his voice. From this performance, you could really tell that he has awesome vocals. I found that this was the first week where he didn’t shout too much. He stuck to the great parts of the song and that’s what made it good. He got good comments from all three judges.

Melinda Doolittle
Heaven Knows

Gwen loved Melinda, and said that she didn’t even need a good luck because she was so good. I thought her outfit was really cute tonight…kind of 60’s-ish. It makes me think a bit though that I’m not sure she should win the competition. While she is and amazing singer, I’m not sure she is contemporary enough to fit in with the music these days. However, she was still so amazing.

Blake Lewis
The Cure

I thought Blake looked so cute tonight. He had on a really nice sweater, and his hair was cute in a messy style. The song was slow, but he still managed to make me watch him the whole time. I never find him boring, and I just really like his singing style. Paula really loved him, and Simon called him the strongest guy of the competition.

Jordin Sparks
Hey baby – No Doubt

I love this song, and I was excited to see what she would do with it. It’s definitely a hard song to sing, and I thought she did a decent job. I wasn’t too impressed with her tonight. I thought the song was a bit too big for her, but she is still really good. I was glad she went for it, but it wasn’t my favorite. I just expected more from her.

Chris Richardson
Don’t Speak – No Doubt

This is another really great song by No Doubt. I didn’t really like what he did with one part of the melody, and it wasn’t my favorite performance by him, but I still really like him. I don’t think the vocals showed his true talent, but I believe that he will be better next week.

America votes out yet another promising contestant

Filed under: Elimination, American Idol Season 6 — cara @ 11:11 am

March 21st, 2007

Bottom two: Stephanie Edwards and Chris Richardson
Voted Out This Week: Stephanie Edwards

First, they had a recap of the night before, and then Peter Noone sang. I’m not going to lie, I’m not the biggest fan of Peter Noone. I think he definitely relates more to the older audience. After that, they showed their Ford commercial for the week. I thought it was pretty cute, and did a good job of showing all of the idols personalities.

Brad Garrett from the tv show “Everybody Loves Raymond” was on the show tonight, and was actually sitting with the idols before elimination time. Ryan Seacrest announced that the first idol who was voted out tonight was Brad. It was a funny little scene.

When they announced that Chris Richardson was in the bottom 2, I was really shocked. I thought that in no way did he deserve to be there. After Chris took his walk to centre stage, Lulu did her performance. I thought she was better than Peter Noone, but still not really my type. In fact, I thought some of the idol contestants were better than her.

Finally they announced that Stephanie Edwards would make up the second half of the bottom 2. In the end, Chris was safe, which definitely a big relief for me.

American Idol goes BRITISH

Filed under: Competition, American Idol Season 6 — cara @ 11:05 am

March 20th, 2007

The theme this week is BRITISH INVASION (Songs from the 60’s)

Peter Noon and Lulu are the mentors for the competitors this week

Haley Scarnato

Tell him – Billy Davis

It sounded like the song was too difficult for her. I can’t really pinpoint why she isn’t successful in the competition, but for some reason, she just doesn’t shine as much as the others. For me, it was a bit boring, but she definitely gave it her all.

Chris Richardson

Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying – Jerry and the Pacemakers

Chris chose to do a slower song this week, which I thought was a good idea. We really got to see his vocal range, so it worked out well for him. I liked the performance a lot, and thought his vocals sounded amazing. Simon thought it was his best performance ever, and that the control of his voice was really good.

Stephanie Edwards

You Don’t have to Say you Love me

I thought her dressed was very beautiful tonight. It was a very pretty blue colour. I thought she did a decent job. The beginning of the song was good, but as the song went on, it got a little worse. She had a few off-keys, and didn’t get very good reviews from the judges. Simon thinks she is losing her edge, which I think is true.

Blake Lewis

Time of the Season

For me, this was Blake’s best performance in the competition yet. It was the perfect balance of great vocals, a little dancing, and some awesome beat boxing. It was a slow song, but I didn’t get bored once, and it was just an entertaining performance. The judges all loved it.

Lakisha Jones

Diamonds are forever - Shirley Bassy

This wasn’t my favorite song choice for her, but it was still good. Her vocals sound good with any song she chooses, but this one was a bit different. I didn’t like the performance, and not because I don’t like her, I just didn’t like the song. It was a bit repetitive, and different sounding. Needless to say, the judges weren’t quite as impressed with her as they have been in the past.

Phil Stacy

Tobacco Road

I didn’t know the song before this show, but I really like it. I thought it was a good song choice for him because it showed a bit more edge. His biggest problem is that he tends to shout when he hits the big notes. He definitely has very good vocals, but I think he overdid it a bit, and it was kind of all over the place.

Jordin Sparks

I Who Have Nothing

This was the best performance of the night by far, and I think it was my favorite performance of the entire season 6. I’m not sure why I loved it so much, but I think it was because it was so heartfelt. It’s an amazing song, and her vocals were impeccable. You just felt so much by watching her sing, and it gave me a lot of chills. Simon liked it, but thought it was too depressing.

Sinjaya Malakar

You Really Got me – The Kings

I’ll give him props for really going for it. I thought he did a really good job considering he doesn’t have the voice that some of the other contestants have. I still don’t really like him, and I feel that his performance was a bit staged, but I was glad to see that he performed more. Simon made fun of him.

Gina Glocksen

Painted Black

I don’t think this was the best song choice for Gina. It’s a great song, and she did a decent job, but I’m not sure how the audience will react. This is a song that you really have to do perfectly, and I don’t think she was quite there. She just didn’t do it justice, vocal wise.

Chris Sligh

She’s Not There – The Zombies

This is another really great song, and another great performance. It probably wasn’t my favorite of the night, but he did the song justice, and his vocals were spot on. He began the song in the audience which I thought was pretty cool. I think he will go very far in the competition. The judges all liked it.

Melinda Doolittle

As Long As He Needs Me

Her voice is so amazing, and it really showed through tonight. For some reason, it didn’t affect me as much as Jordin’s, but it was still one of the best of the night by far. The judges gave her more props than they did Jordin. Randy said that she was already a pro. It wasn’t my favorite performance, but it was still amazing.

Girls take the lead as America votes out a guy

March 14th, 2007 The Top 12 Results Show

Bottom three: Brandon Rogers, Phil Stacy, and Sinjaya Malakar
Voted out this week: Brandon Rogers

Brandon Rogers eliminatedThey did a recap of last night, showing the highlights and the lowlights. After the video clip ended, the top 12 sang their medley, which of course was a tribute to Diana Ross. I thought they all sounded really good. I was actually impressed with how everyone stepped up. It included such songs as “Stop In the Name of Love” and “Baby Love.” Chris Sligh was one that really stood out to me in it.

This week was the first week that they did a Ford commercial. It was pretty decent. Once again Chris Sligh sounded really good. When they finally got to the results, it was said that the bottom three consisted of Brandon Rogers, Phil Stacy, and Sinjaya Malakar.

Before we found out who would be leaving this week, Diana Ross came out in a bright coral dress with a huge poofy shawl. I think her prime years were definitely when she was younger because she didn’t sound as good as I thought she would. I love almost every one of her songs, but tonight’s performance didn’t show her true talent.

I thought the bottom three was pretty accurate. I was a bit surprised to see that it was all boys, but I thought America did a decent job. I was pretty unhappy with the final decision. I thought for sure that Sinjaya would go. Brandon was never my favorite, and I thought he would have gone soon anyway, but he was a bit better than Sinjaya.

Top 12 Perform

Tonight, American Idol is a show dedicated to Diana Ross. She was a member of the ever popular Supremes before she decided to start a solo career. She helped out with each of the contestants this week. All the songs tonight will be ones which Diana has sung.

Diana Ross Coaches American Idol Season 6 Contestants

Brandon Rogers
You Can’t Hurry Love
This is one of my favorite songs, and I think it’s a song that a lot of people will know and sing along with. There was one part in the song when his voice cracked really badly. Overall, it was a pretty terrible performance. There were quite a few notes off-key, and he forgot his words. Randy said that it needed to be a lot better than that, which I agree with. This performance puts him in a lot of danger.

Melinda Doolittle
Home
Melinda’s performance tonight wasn’t my favorite out of all her other one’s. For me, it wasn’t a perfect song choice, but of course she still sounded amazing. She actually ended up crying by the end of her performance, which then lead to Paula crying. Simon said that she made a boring song entertaining.

Chris Sligh
Endless Love
Once again, it wasn’t my favorite song choice. He started out a bit shaky, and I knew the song, but I didn’t actually recognize it. It wasn’t his best performance, but it was still decent. All three judges said that the arrangement was terrible, and Simon even said that he “murdered” it. He looked different this week, and I discovered later that it was because he wasn’t wearing glasses.

Gina Glocksen
Love Child
I thought she started the song in a really weird way. There was no easing into it, so it sounded like she started in the middle of the song. At times, I thought the register was a bit too low for her, because to me, she is much better in her upper register. I wasn’t impressed with her tonight at all. She often sounds like she is screaming.

Sinjaya Malakar
Ain’t No Mountain High Enough
I was hoping that this song would help him give more into his performance. This is also a song which almost everyone knows, which I think puts a bit of pressure on him to live up to its expectations. I didn’t like his hair tonight, because it kind of looked like a perm gone wrong. Once again, his performance didn’t cut it for me. However, that being said, I do think he is getting better.

Haley Scarnato
Missing You
I really love this song, but it was too big for her. It was kind of a weird performance, in that I wasn’t too sure what to think of it. I couldn’t identify whether it was the arrangement of the song, or just her singing, but it was an interesting performance. This isn’t to say she isn’t a good singer, because I know she is. Her biggest problem is choosing songs. Simon actually encouraged her, which I thought was very sweet.

Phil Stacy
I’m Gonna Make you Love me
It wasn’t like it was an extremely entertaining performance, but I really liked it. I thought his voice sounded really good, and that the song showed off his voice. Randy summed it up by saying that the performance was a bit boring, but that his voice sounded great. Simon said that when he hits the big notes, he shouts a bit, which he needs to work on.

Lakisha Jones
God Bless the Child
This is another well-known song, but I wasn’t worried that she wouldn’t do it justice. I think her dress looked very beautiful tonight. She usually does a good job of picking her outfits. I thought it was an amazing performance, and the best part about it was that it seemed so effortless. I didn’t find myself bored at all during it.

Blake Lewis
You Keep Me Hanging On
He said in his video that he changed up the song a bit to make it his own, but I didn’t find anything really different about it. It definitely wasn’t his best performance, and I found it a bit boring, but I still think he’s a very good singer. He just didn’t sound as good as he has the last couple weeks.

Stephanie Edwards
Love Hang-Over
I liked Stephanie’s performance better tonight than last week’s. I think she chose good song for her voice, but all of the judges didn’t like the arrangement. One thing I liked was how it had a bit of attitude, which suits her. She also forgot her words, but I thought it was a decent performance.

Chris Richardson
The Boss
Chris has a very good falsetto, and I love it when he uses it. I actually really liked his performance tonight. There were a couple notes that were off-key, but it was up-beat and entertaining. I was glad that Randy mentioned not to overdue it, because now he knows what he can improve. I thought it was weird when Simon said it was terrible and he hated it. I don’t see how it was that bad.

Jordin Sparks
If We Hold On Together
This was a good song choice for Jordin, and I thought she sang it quite well. It displayed her vocals really well. I think that she is a top contender in the competition, which Randy apparently agrees with because he said that she has now made it to the level of Lakisha and Melinda. She has really improved with each week of the competition.

Top 8 females perform

Filed under: Competition, American Idol Season 6 — cara @ 1:49 pm

Wednesday, March 7th

Jordin Sparks

Heartbreaker - Pat Benatar

I really liked Jordin’s performance tonight, but I didn’t think she got the credit she deserved from Simon. I’m sure that this is a really hard song to sing, and she did it so well. It was energetic and fun and it showed a lot of personality. Simon said it sounded a bit shreeky, but then he also said that she would definitely be here next week.

Sabrina Sloan

I wasn’t pleased with Sabrina tonight. Paula really complimented her voice, but I think it was extremely shaky and very pitchy in places. I really liked the song though, but I don’t think she did it justice. It also sounded like she was just screaming during a lot of it.

Antonella Barba

This week, Antonella picked a song that suited her voice a lot better. However, it was still pretty terrible. The way she sang tonight was nowhere near the level that American Idol demands. It kind of sucks because she is the worst singer in the competition, but she never gets voted out. I think the only reason she managed to make it though each round is by her looks, and perhaps the fact that there are suggestive pictures of her on the internet.

Haley Scarnato

If My Heart Had Wings – Faith Hill

I thought this was another bad performance. It was an odd song choice, and she couldn’t pull it off. I have a feeling that she doesn’t really understand how to improve, because she has yet to choose a perfect song for her. It was so boring.

Stephanie Edwards

Stephanie has an amazing voice, but there is something that bothers me about her, and that is that she is too typical. She sounds almost identical to Beyonce, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but we already have a voice like that in the industry. Another problem I have with her is that she takes a song, and sings it exactly the way it is. There is no originality to it, and that worries me.

Lakisha Jones

I Have Nothing - Whitney Houston

Once again, she had an amazing performance. It probably wasn’t her best performance ever, but it was still amazing. You never see her make mistakes, and it’s really rare to find a person who alwaya has a good performance. The judges all really like it.

Gina Glocksen

Call Me When You’re Sober – Evanescence

I thought this was a much better song choice for Gina. It was a bit more rock, which I think really suits her. However, it’s a pretty hard song, and she didn’t sound near as good as Evanesence. Overall though, I thought she did a decent job. There were a few pitchy spots, but she has potential.

Melinda Doolittle

W-O-M-A-N

This performance was just so fun. You could tell she really had a good time with it, and that made the whole thing that much better. For me, Melinda is the most consistent girl of the bunch (and perhaps Lakisha too.) As the competition goes on, I can’t wait to see what Melinda will do next. She is amazing.

The FINAL 8 BOYS struggle to show America what they’ve got

Filed under: Competition, American Idol Season 6 — cara @ 12:41 pm

Tuesday, March 6th

Blake Lewis

I actually really liked his song choice tonight. It wasn’t the most exciting song in the world, but it really suited his voice. It was almost like a reggae type of song. As Paula and Randy said, they didn’t even know the song but they still thought the performance was really cool.

Sinjaya Malakar

Waiting on the World to Change – John Mayer

This time, Sinjaya sang a more modern song by John Mayer. I thought it was a good idea to try and be more up to date, but it was not good. Just like his last week’s performance, it was extremely boring. I think Randy is right in saying that his energy is really low. To me, it seems like he doesn’t even want to be there. You don’t see a passion within him that you see in some of the other competitors.

Sundance Head

I really wanted to like Sundance’s performance tonight, but I didn’t think it was good. It was a bad song choice to show America his true talents. I’d never heard the song, and all I could really identify in it was the name “Jeremy.” Surprisingly, Randy and Paula really liked it, but Simon was more accurate when he said it was worse than the week before.

Travis Tritt, a well known country singer, was actually watching in the audience tonight. He mentioned that he is coming out with a new album which is produced by Randy Jackson. I’m excited because he has some good songs such as “It’s a Great Day to Be Alive”

Chris Richardson

I didn’t expect Chris to sing a song like he did, but I loved it. He brings such an interesting flare to the competition. This is really the first year that they’ve had contestants who sound like they could already be on the radio. Simon said that he didn’t think Chris has had a performance that is up to his potential yet this season. I think Chris could do better too, but he is still amazing no matter what.

Jared Cotter

Stevie Wonder

I thought his performance was quite good. It had upbeat moments, and slower moments. He hit some good notes, but he also had some pitchy ones. I think he definitely has the performance skills to be a singer, but his singing isn’t perfect yet. Paula said that she would like to see him make his singing more colorful. Simon agreed with her in saying that he needed to be a bit more original. I’m still waiting for him to completely amaze me.

Brandon Rogers

It turns out Brian is a classical piano player. They showed a clip of him playing, and he sounded very good. I liked his performance tonight. This week, I found that it was much better than I’ve seen him do before. He reminds of a Lenny Kravitz in a way. It was a really good song for his type of voice. The judges weren’t thrilled, and Simon said that he is a bit worried for him.

Phil Stacey

I Need You-Leanne Rhymes

I was not happy at all with Phil tonight. He is usually consistent, but I didn’t even want to listen to him tonight. I think the worst part was the song choice. I also found that at times, he was almost screaming. Randy pointed out that he needs to work on his lower register. The judges cut him down quite a bit. One thing I did like though was how much he showed his personality tonight. Surprisingly, he’s quite witty.

Chris Sligh

I loved the way he started his song. Right of the bat, he sounded so amazing, and it instantly captured my attention. Further into the song, it wasn’t as good, but I still liked it. To me, he had the best vocal of the night. I found it extremely weird that the judges didn’t like it. I think he’s really good.

America’s 2nd elimination

Filed under: Elimination, American Idol Season 6 — cara @ 4:59 pm

March 1st

Voted out tonight:

Nick Pedro
A.J. Tabaldo
Alaina Alexander
Leslie Hunt

Ryan Seacrest announced that Kelly Pickler would be singing tonight. As always, they did a recap of the night before, which usually takes up a bit of time.

Then there was a group performance. I just hoped that would be better than last week’s. They sang. “Joy to the World” which I thought was a much better song choice. Three guys that sang a harmony at the beginning was terrible, but other than that, it was pretty entertaining. I think that sometimes the music it too loud for them to hear what they are singing, so it’s hard for them to stay perfectly on key. It’s easy to hear a lot of off-notes.

Nick Pedro

Alaina AlexanderThe first contestant voted out was Nick Pedro. This is the point in the competition when voting people out starts to get really difficult. I thought Nick was quite good, so it sucked to see him go. Simon thought it was due to his lack of charisma, which is a plausible explanation.

The first girl to be voted out was Alaina Alexander. I felt so bad that she had to sing one more time when she was crying. I don’t get why they make them do that. To me, it seems really mean and unnecessary.

Before the final vote-offs, Kelly Pickler came out. I loved Kelly last season because she was so candid and funny. Ryan asked her if she’d spent her money on anything, and she said “shoes.” Her personality is hard to explain, but she always keeps me laughing. I thought she looked really cute with her blonde bob. It was definitely a much older look that she had on last season’s American Idol. She sang “I Wonder,” which she co-wrote. I thought she sounded really good, and a bit of Reba McEntire.

A.J. TabaldoLeslie HuntThe final guy to be eliminated was A.J. Tabaldo. I wasn’t too upset with this decision. I never expected him to win the competition. However, it’s still sad to see him go. I thought he was quite a good singer. The final girl to be eliminated was Leslie Hunt. It was weird because two of the people to be eliminated sang Michael Buble’s “I’m Feeling Good.”

I think America did a pretty good job this week in voting.

Top 10 Females failed to live up to last weeks show

Filed under: Competition, American Idol Season 6 — cara @ 4:33 pm

February 28th

Gina Glocksen

This song suited Gina better than her last week’s performance, but I still don’t think she has what it takes to be the American idol. To me, she just isn’t strong enough. I agreed with Simon when he said he was confused as to who she really was.

Alaina Alexander
I’m Not Ready to Make Nice – Dixie Chicks

She started out pretty well. She definitely did a better job than last week, but it still wasn’t very good. The song was a bit too big for her, but considering the difficulty, she did okay. On the bright side, she’s pretty.

Lakisha Jones
Midnight Train to Georgia – Gladys Knight and the Pips

Lakisha dedicated her song to her grandma who is almost ninety years old. I couldn’t believe it when I saw her because she looked so good and healthy. Once again she was very good. She took a different approach from last week, and chose a less upbeat song. I don’t think it was quite as good as last week, but she is still amazing, and is definitely one of the front runners of the competition. Simon said he didn’t like her outfit.

Melinda Doolittle
My Funny Valentine – Frank Sinatra

Her performance was by far the best of the night. There is no way you could find anything wrong with it. As Paula said, the arrangement was amazing, and Simon called her incredible. It gave me shivers.

Antonella Barba
Because You Loved Me – Celine Dion

Once again, her performance was borderline excruciating. I’m not sure what the judges were thinking when they chose her to be in the top 24. She just isn’t near the level that this competition demands. In my opinion, she did a better job than last week, but Simon thought it was worse. You can tell she doesn’t take criticism well.

Jordin Sparks
Reflection- Christina Aguilera

I really liked Jordin’s dress tonight. It was a teal colour and it really suited her. I don’t think she sang as well as she could have, but she is still very good. You can tell she is just such a sweet girl, and is and amazing singer for being only 17.

Stephanie Edwards
Dangerously In Love- Beyonce

I think she did an amazing job for the song that she sang. This song must be extremely challenging to sing, and it was even harder since she had Beyonce’s reputation to live up to. I don’t think many other competitors could have sung that. She did a very good job.

Leslie Hunt
I’m Feeling Good – Michael Buble

I thought the beginning was good, except that it went on a bit too long. She started acapella. It was a good idea, but she just kept it too long. I also didn’t really like the ending. Actually technically I didn’t really like the performance at all.

Haley Scarnato
Queen of the Night

I liked this performance in that we got to see a bit more personality from Haley. However, it wasn’t anything special. I’m not really happy with any of performances. It’s not like her voice is as terrible as some of the others, but there isn’t anything about her that stands out in my mind.

Sabrina Sloan
Whitney Houston

I’d never heard this song before she sang it. It wasn’t my favorite performance, but she definitely has a good voice. I actually agreed with Simon when he said that she was almost on the verge of shouting. She is a top competitor for sure.

I predict that Antonella Barba and Alaina Alexander. Or at least that’s what I hope.
